Pumpkin Smash 2020

Updated: Nov 23, 2020

This past weekend, we broke ground at our new compost partner, NuGen International Farm. The #squirmsquad came out for NuGen’s regular farmers market and stayed for our first inaugural pumpkin smash.

pumpkin smash, the aftermath.

The US Department of Energy estimates that of the 1.3 BILLION pounds of pumpkins produced by farmers each year, 254 million tons end up in municipal waste landfills. The EPA estimates that every 1 pound of food waste sent to the landfill produces 3.8 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.

This pumpkin smashed itself. Food waste rots from the inside out-gasses build up inside and literally explode the food after a period of time. That process allowed the seeds inside to have a clear space with plenty of available nutrition to grow the next generation plant.

If you haven’t joined the #squirmsquad yet, you should look at your rotting pumpkin and reconsider your goals for 2021. Think of how many hungry worms could be eating that old jack-o-lantern. Plus, our trash pick up subscribers also receive discounts & free delivery on route days on Let It Rot’s products like worm tea, worm castings, & custom soil blends. Sign up here to join the #squirmsquad!

Pumpkins, and all plant-based waste, can be composted for $1/lb at one of our drop off locations, One World Zero Waste in Tequesta, NuGen International in Loxahatchee, or The Garden Shoppe in downtown West Palm Beach.

Let It Rot has been working hard on creating a calendar just in time for holiday gift shopping featuring the women of the Palm Beach sustainable community. Here's an outtake from our first shoot! Stay tuned for our release on Kickstarter. We are also about ready to launch our Patreon, which will have seed subscriptions, product samples, and other exclusive content and other exclusive content and discounts, launching soon!
