Coontie, scientifically known as Zamia integrifolia, is a cycad, a primitive plant with ancient origins, native to Florida. It's characterized by its fern-like, evergreen foliage and a thick, underground stem. Coontie is known for its hardiness, drought and salt tolerance, and ability to thrive in various light conditions. These slow growers can get large over time so leave some space for it to grow. Prefers full sun but will grow in full shade slowly.  Hosts the Atala butterfly once thought to be extinct.
