American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a deciduous shrub known for its vibrant, purple berry clusters that encircle the stems in the fall which birds love. These native shrubs typically reach 5-8 feet tall and wide, with arching branches. The leaves are aromatic when crushed and are arranged oppositely along the stems. While the berries are technically edible, they are more commonly used for making jelly or wine due to their somewhat bland flavor. The leaves also contain a compound that may repel insects like mosquitoes.
